Alternative Ideas for ‘Occasional’ (RED) Foods

Hot food
Savoury pastries, pasta, pizzas, oven baked potato products
· Choose reduced saturated fat and reduced salt versions of above products.
· Serve with salads or vegetables and use wholemeal varieties where possible.
· Reduced saturated fat soups
· Reduced saturated fat quiche
· Falafel
· Corn cobs
· Baked potatoes with reduced saturated fat toppings.
· Bread based pizzas with reduced saturated fat toppings.
· Toast, crumpets, muffins and jaffles.
· Reduced saturated fat and reduced salt versions of rice and noodle dishes eg fried rice, stir-fried noodles with lean meat and vegetables or sushi.
· Hamburgers, kebabs, burritos or tacos.

Crumbed and coated foods, frankfurters, sausages
· Choose reduced saturated fat and reduced salt versions of above products.
· Serve with salads or vegetables and use wholemeal varieties where possible.
· Meatballs, skinless chicken drumsticks and char-grilled chicken fillets.
· Baked potatoes with reduced saturated fat fillings.
· Corn cobs

Snack foods and drinks
Sugar sweetened drinks and ices
· Water
· Milk drinks (reduced fat)
· Fruit juices (>99% fruit <125mls)
· Frozen juice sticks (>99% juice), frozen milk sticks.
· Frozen fruit pieces, frozen fruit juice cups (<99% juice <125mls)
· Juice based slushees (<99% juice <125mls)

From Term 1 2007, sugar sweetened drinks categorised as Red (ie more than 300kJ and 100mg of sodium per serve) must not be sold from school canteens or vending machines at any time. For more information on the sweetened drinks ban go to http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/pubs/2006/pdf/softdrink_ban.pdf

· Fresh or dried fruit
· Raisin and fruit bread or buns
· Fruit salad
· Fruit purees in tubs or tubes
· Apple crisps
· Dehydrated fruit products
· Small serves of reduced fat biscuits
· Commercially baked fruit bars

Savoury snack foods and biscuits
· Rice and corn cakes
· Reduced fat and reduced salt popcorn
· Rice crackers
· Wheatmeal biscuits and water crackers
· Garlic or herb breads (thin spread)
· Dried fruit
· Reduced fat and reduced salt crisp breads
· Cheese sticks, cubes and slices
· Reduced fat and reduced salt Grissini
· Wholegrain breakfast cereals
· Vegetables and dips
· Small packets of cheese and biscuit dippers

Ice creams, milk-based ice confections and dairy desserts
· Yoghurts, custard, fromage frais and creamed rice
· Reduced fat Dixie cups
· Fruit juice based products (>99% juice)
· Reduced-fat ice creams
· Frozen milk sticks
· Frozen yoghurt
· Small serve sizes of ice creams. Contact manufacturers for reduced energy and fat products.

Cakes, muffins and sweet pastries
· Small serves of un-iced cakes and muffins
· Small un-iced finger buns
· Scones - plain, pumpkin and fruit
· Fruit breads and buns
· Hot cross buns
· Mini-muffins
· Commercially baked fruit bars
